One person has died in a volcanic eruption in New Zealand on White Island of the country's north coast. The Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said there are about 50 people on the island, most of them tourists. Shaimaa Khalil has the latest.

Tourists were seen walking inside the rim of the White Island crater just moments before the eruption. New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said a number of people were believed to be injured and are being transported to shore. Police said at least one of those evacuated from the island has been critically injured. Police are also warning people living near the area to be aware of the potential for ash fall and to stay indoors. Despite being one of the country's most active volcanoes, White Island is a popular tourist destination. The eruption began around mid-afternoon local time, throwing smoke and debris into the air.
